Ask a group of collectors what to do with the paper sleeves that come with records and many will say "replace them with MoFi sleeves". This guide explains what actually differs between the two, so you can decide whether re-sleeving is worth it for your collection.
Construction compared

|---|---|---|
| Material | Paper | HDPE + 80 gsm paper (three-ply), per MoFi |
| Surface touching record | Paper fibres | Smooth plastic |
| Static | Can build static when removed | Described as anti-static |
| Size | Varies | 12.125 x 12.125 in, per MoFi |

Mobile Fidelity Original Master Inner Sleeves (50 pack)
Three-ply anti-static HDPE + paper; 12.125 x 12.125 in; 50 count
Pros
- Three-ply HDPE + paper, anti-static
- Long-standing collector standard
Cons
- Slightly larger than paper sleeves; can be snug in tight jackets
Why paper causes problems
Paper is slightly abrasive at the microscopic level. Every time a record slides out, any grit trapped in the sleeve can rub against the surface, causing fine "paper scuffs". Paper also sheds tiny fibres, and the friction of removal creates static that pulls dust onto the record. These issues are minor per play but add up over years.
Why plastic-lined sleeves help
A smooth HDPE surface creates less friction, so records slide out more easily with less static and less risk of scuffing. The paper layer in the middle gives the sleeve body so it does not crease or flop like thin poly sleeves.
Downsides of switching
- Cost: a pack of 50 adds up for large collections.
- Fit: three-ply sleeves are a little larger and thicker; very tight jackets can be snug.
- Time: re-sleeving a whole collection takes a while. Start with favourites and new purchases.
What to do with original paper sleeves
Printed sleeves with lyrics or artwork are part of the record's value. Keep them inside the jacket, behind the record in its new sleeve, or in an outer sleeve alongside the jacket. Plain white paper sleeves can usually be recycled.
Do the switch in the right order
- Clean the record if it is dirty (see record cleaning for beginners).
- Let it dry completely.
- Slide it into the new inner sleeve.
- Protect the jacket with an outer sleeve.
Big Fudge 12-inch Outer Sleeves (100 pack)
3 mil HDPP (polypropylene); 12.75 x 12.75 in; open top
Pros
- Clear polypropylene resists clouding
- Fits most single and many double LPs
Cons
- Snug on thick gatefolds and box sets

FAQ
Are MoFi sleeves worth it?
For records you play often or care about, many collectors consider them worth it because they reduce scuffing and static. For rarely played records, cheaper poly-lined sleeves also work.
Do MoFi sleeves fit in gatefold jackets?
Usually yes, but they are slightly larger than standard paper sleeves, so very tight jackets may be snug.
Can I reuse MoFi sleeves?
Yes, as long as they are clean and not creased.
